Flipped Lessons!
In a traditional classroom, a teacher might lecture or guide learning activities and then ask students to practice or complete a written assignment at home. (Not that there's anything wrong with that! We'll have plenty of traditional lessons in English class this year!)
In a FLIPPED classroom, students watch a teacher's lecture or guide themselves through a powerpoint or online lesson at home, then they work on an assignment in the classroom the next day, with the teacher there for guidance. Occasionally, we'll try a few lessons in this flipped sequence. Be sure to jot down any questions you have and make note of the parts of the lesson that challenge or confuse you.
Lesson 1: Click on the "Grammar 1" button below to open up the Parts of Speech Lesson. Bring the sentence progression page (showing the change from your first sentence to your last) to class on Friday/Tuesday. If you have time, watch a few of the Schoolhouse Rock grammar videos (optional).

Online Lesson 2: [October 7/8]. Open up the powerpoint by clicking on the "Sentence Combining 1" button. Read the introductory slides that review clauses and phrases, then work through the sentence combining exercise to craft 5 sentences. Be sure to experiment with dependent clauses and prepositional phrases, since that's what we recently studied! The assignment is due in class on Oct. 9/13.
Upcoming Lesson: [Octoboer _______] Click on the blue button that says "Birds and Bees" and listen to the Snap Judgment story featuring Mike McGee's performance about the magic of the universe. Fill out the listening guide that you received in class today as you listen. (It may be more interesting to you to just listen through the podcast first, then go back and listen for the answers (you can pause and replay as often as needed!) Only answer questions 1-6. We'll discuss the podcast and tackle Question 7 together in class! Here's a link to the LISTENING GUIDE.
Note: If you have any issues playing this mp3 on your computer, go to the NPR page or to the Snap Judgment website to listen online: http://snapjudgment.org/
